A tuk tuk (or "auto rickshaw") is really, really common around the world. The reason isn't because they are "cool" or even convenient, but really cheap (inexpensive). There was an Indian company (tata) that came out with a really inexpensive, no-frills, bare-bones 4-wheel vehicle (the nano) but it failed not because there wasn't demand but because they couldn't meet the price point that they announced. (And a big portion of Indian population has very little money). So, a "tuk tuk" is really cheap to produce and millions are sold every year.

I met a guy from Nepal and he said many in the big cities can't get more that their usual 10 blocks. Literally born there and never leave their surrounded community. If they were able to afford something that could get them a little further maybe that would change the society for the better.
